With each page peppered with two sets of questions that respectively invite younger and older readers to engage with the story and discuss wider topics, Tereza Hepburn’s Spikey and the Caterpillar Sausage Cat presents an action-packed story that lends itself perfectly to sharing and reading together. In addition, Mike Phillips’ softly vibrant illustrations add charm.

As for the story, this is a follow-up to Spikey, a hedgehog who regards his Regent’s Park home as the “whole wide world.” Though very small, with one back leg shorter and weaker than the other, Spikey “has a very big heart”, and therein lies the heart of this story, and the wider series — kindness.

This second adventure sees Spikey encounter different animals, often overcoming initial weariness and misunderstandings to form friendships. Then comes drama and peril in the form of a cat, and humour too, when Spikey and Dave the gigantic worm wonder whether it might actually be a “caterpillar sausage cat”. Above all, though, there’s a sense of pulling together to do the right thing for your friends.

With a share-able story, and each page enlivened by illustrations and discussion questions, this smart hardback also has gift-appeal.
